NaPoWriMo 2016 Day Five

Mareritt

I’ll nighthag you.

I’ve run my fingers
through your hair before but
this time I’ll leave it tangled,
knots you can’t uncomb –
elf-locks like scars
riven up your back
with steel claws.

The witch is riding
not scared to snap
                              your skinny hips.
Shadows wait to break bones.

I’ll be she who steps down
from trees
slips through keyholes
up your nostrils
compresses your chest with thighs
on ribs.

In the morning
                         shaken
you’ll blame the tightness
on smoker’s cough.

NaPoWriMo 2016 Day Three

Two Epitaphs

Even amidst fierce flames
The golden lotus can be planted

The inkwell and letters
had been cleared away
                                      but
she is never short of flowers.
No lotuses, just daffodils.

Stones on graves
                           are a Jewish thing,
and despite the controversy
she thought she was
a bit of a jew.

Not far away, Asa says
he was foolish enough
to have been poet.

NaPoWriMo 2016 Day Two

Looking Glass Syndrome

Lift the curtain and

there is a girl.

Holds a fawn,
hands round neck

drawn in
drawn back
a daughter with an addiction
to daydreams

wasn’t the lullaby of summer this time –
the science of sound, an acoustic urge
to sleep luminously

it was the living room mirror
chess pieces to the right but
she reached inversely
diagonalised

and fell
fell

fell

without snowdrops or mushrooms or awakening

to the bloom of the wrong world.

(Used a random word generator to get this list of words: Cougar lullaby passenger adopter inverse estate wolf addiction cadaver cloth eyetooth daughter periodic herb americana luminous heaviest drink dishonest daydream acoustic believing bloom awakening rodent hairless axis sky hand rum diagonal mushroom; which made me think of Through The Looking Glass - Lewis Caroll.)

NaPoWriMo 2016 Day One

Untitled

She asks were I woke up
this time.

I cough cigarette spawn from lungs
and wonder why
she whispers like grass
                                     (like I’ve done something
                                      wrong)

Spilling words darned with anger
I show her the spectacle
of my legs, bruises a diagram
of kissing back to reality,
a new doll tripping
                               down
                                          stairs.

(Found poem using Kate Atkinson's Human Croquet)
